Potash fertilizers: how to choose? Advise from agronomist

It seems that only yesterday the spring sowing season ended, but autumn work and time to think about potash nutrition is just around the corner. In a month, the annual boom will begin, and agronomists will form requests for potash fertilizers. It is worth to remember, that the diversity of choice of potash fertilize gives us the opportunity to select the composition for a certain crop and soil to get the maximum effect from the applied fertilizers.

Let’s deal with the potash nutrition issue together.
1.  If you are growing potatoes, vegetables, legumes or perennial grasses, you should pay attention to the presence of magnesium in potassium fertilizer.
Research proved that to obtain high yields, magnesium content in potassium-magnesium fertilizer is necessary:
no less than 6% for cabbage, corn, potatoes and reddish,
8-10% for beetroot,
8-13% for tomatoes.

2.  Silicon  should be a part of potash fertilizer when you are growing sugar beet, grain, sunflower and corn.  Along with magnesium, silicon is the most important macro element for plants. Consumption of silicon in agricultural crops can reach 700 kg / ha, which is more than nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium together. More than 200 million tons of silicon is annually removed with crops. The use of silicon in fertilizer increases the strength of the mechanical fiber of plants and significantly increases their resistance.
In addition, silicon accumulates and suppresses pathogenic microbes which already occur in infected tissues of plants.  Thus, silicon fertilizers are an alternative and a good addition to be used together with pesticides and allow significantly reduce their consumption.

For silicon-loving crops, potash nutrition is recommended to be carried out by a complex fertilizer of a balanced composition with potassium and magnesium.

3.  Sugar beets, root vegetables, alfalfa and cabbage require the potassium-magnesium nutrition to be enriched with sodium. Sodium regulates the transport of carbohydrates in plants. Good sodium saturation increases their winter resistance. If sodium is in deficit the formation of chlorophyll slows down.  At the same time, sodium is able to replace partially the functions of potassium if it is in deficit.

4.  To obtain a high yield of grain, the presence of magnesium in potash fertilizer can be reduced to 2%, that allows to use effectively "Kalimag" fertilizer with potassium 45% and magnesium 2%. This ratio ensures that the right proportions are met and crops are provided with balanced nutrition at an optimal price.
